Import your car to Spain without duty and VAT

When you move to Spain, the law lets you bring your personal car in without import duty (10%), VAT (21%) or the registration tax. This is called relief under change of residence (cambio de residencia). The pack explains who qualifies, what the conditions are and which documents you need — step by step, with no overpayments and no refunds from customs or the tax office to chase.

Who this pack is for

Duty-free import is a one-off right granted when you change your country of residence. It works only if the conditions are met — and those are exactly what gets checked, often with mistakes.

Not for: those importing a car to sell it, who used the car for less than 6 months before the move, who stay in Spain as a tourist, or who are looking for a way around the law. This is an informational product, not a tax-avoidance scheme and not legal advice.

What's in the pack

The pack follows the real import journey: from checking your eligibility for relief to registration and plates. Each part covers its own stage — together they make up the full procedure.

guidecore part

Duty-free car import under change of residence

The full path: who qualifies for exemption from duty and taxes (including the 10% duty, 21% VAT and the registration tax), 12 months of residence outside the EU and 6+ months of using the car before the move, the 12-month no-sale obligation, filing deadlines, and what to do at the border and inside the country.

What you get
End-to-end understanding of the procedure — with deadlines, authorities and typical reasons for refusals.
Why
The biggest losses come not from duty but from mistakes: importing at the wrong moment, missed deadlines or the wrong forms filed.
checklists

Stage-by-stage checklists

Short lists that keep the procedure under control and let nothing slip through.

The procedure stretches over weeks and several authorities; without a list it's easy to forget one document — and start over.

Checking your eligibility before departure, packing your documents (vehicle title, purchase agreement, insurance, proof of residence), and the list of steps after you receive your residencia number.

templates

Application and document templates

No drafting an application from scratch — take a proven form and fill in your details.

Authorities reject applications over wording and blank fields; a template removes that risk.

Ready-to-fill forms submitted during the procedure, with hints for every field and completed examples.

taxes and deadlines

Tax and deadline calendar

An honest picture of the costs: relief does not mean “zero euros” — small mandatory payments remain.

The internet is full of contradictory advice that calls the relief either zero or total; the pack separates the exemption from what everyone pays.

Which taxes are waived under the relief, which amounts you still have to pay (ITV inspection, DGT fee for plates) and what to file when.

Formats: PDFs in Ukrainian, Russian and English. Readable on a phone or computer, printable on paper. Updated whenever the requirements change — your next download is free.

How it works

The pack is not a service and not an intermediary. It is knowledge, packaged so you can go through the procedure yourself.

  1. 1

    Get the PDF

After payment the pack downloads on this site immediately — no waiting for emails and no middlemen.

  2. 2

    Check your eligibility

The first section of the guide is a short eligibility test: ownership period, residence status, intent not to sell the car.

  3. 3

    Follow the steps

Then — the route: documents before departure, border clearance, ITV, the tax office, registration with the DGT and getting your plates.

The pack does not file documents for you and does not influence the authorities' decisions. It explains a procedure that exists in Spanish law and shows how to go through it without the typical mistakes. This is not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is duty-free car import?

It is an exemption from duty and taxes when a person who is changing their country of residence to Spain imports a personal car (cambio de residencia). Under the general regime, a car imported from outside the EU is subject to 10% duty, 21% VAT and the registration tax; under the relief, none of these three charges apply.

Who qualifies for the relief?

The main conditions: you lived outside the EU customs territory for at least 12 consecutive months, you are actually moving to Spain, the car has been used by you for at least 6 months in your previous country of residence and is registered in your name, and you undertake not to sell or transfer it for 12 months after import. The exact list of conditions and documents is in the guide.

Why must the car have been used for at least 6 months?

It is a legal requirement (EU directive 2009/132/EC and regulation 1186/2009): the relief is intended for transporting personal property already in use, not for importing new cars to sell or to save money. A car bought right before the move usually does not qualify. The 6 months of car use and the 12 months of residence outside the EU are two separate periods, checked separately.

How long do I have to complete the paperwork?

The customs declaration claiming the relief (despacho a libre práctica) must be filed within 12 months of establishing residence in Spain. The car itself can be imported before the move — then you will need a commitment to establish residence within 6 months (customs may require a guarantee). After import, the car cannot be sold, gifted or transferred to others for 12 months without notifying customs.

Does the relief mean I pay nothing at all?

No. Duty, VAT and the registration tax are exempt. Small mandatory payments remain: the ITV inspection, the DGT fee for registration and number plates, and possible services. The pack includes a tax calendar that separates what is exempt from what everyone pays.

My car is in the EU / my car is from outside the EU — is there a difference?

Yes. For a car already released for free circulation in the EU, no duty applies in principle, but the taxes and registration procedure differ. The guide covers both scenarios separately, as well as duty-free import under change of residence.

Is the pack legal advice?

No. It is an informational product: a description of the procedure, checklists and templates. It does not assess your personal situation and does not guarantee the authorities' decisions. For complex cases, consult a gestor or a lawyer.

What languages is the pack in?

The guide, checklists and templates are written in Ukrainian, Russian and English. The page you are reading is available in all three languages; key Spanish terms (tasa, residencia, matriculación) are given in the original.

How do I get the pack after payment?

After payment, Payhip shows the pack files right on the order page and emails them to you — no separate email to wait for. The files are available in three languages: Ukrainian, Russian and English.
